Wireless 20|20 and Galooli to Help Service Providers Navigate Energy and Carbon Footprint

Wireless 20|20 and Galooli to Help Service Providers Navigate Energy and Carbon Footprint Reducing Plans Required in New Broadband Funding Submissions

Galooli Ltd. (https://www.galooli.com), a leading provider of energy asset management, monitoring, and analytics software, and Wireless 20|20 (https://www.wireless2020.com), a broadband network consulting group announced today the two organizations will work together to offer service providers support to develop energy efficiency and carbon footprint reduction plans required in new broadband funding submissions.

While a focus on energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprint has become strategic priorities for many within the telecom industry, quantifying these efficiencies is poised to become a requirement. This is especially true for those applying for various forms of Federal broadband grants and low-interest loans designed to establish and improve broadband capabilities across the United States.

The recently signed Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) places energy efficiency at a strategic imperative and it will have a significant impact across many industries and communities across the United States. Part of the IRA’s objectives is to invest in rural communities by expanding access to clean energy and energy efficiency upgrades. Its intention is to boost long-term resiliency and reliability, while expanding rural opportunities in the clean energy economy. The law will provide hundreds of billions of dollars into efficiency and green energy from the grid to industrial scale microgrids, including telecom and datacom operations.

“Telecom operators already account for an estimated 3 percent or more of the total global energy demand just for fixed fiber and wireless broadband communications, while data center operations probably require double that energy,” said Berge Ayvazian, Senior Analyst and Consultant at Wireless 20|20. “Several of our customers that we help with broadband service grants have already begun programs to enhance their energy efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint because it’s operationally and ethically good for business. Now, fully documenting this reduction will become a requirement for existing and new federal funds and grants, and together with Galooli we are fully prepared to support how to address these requirements.”

“All broadband service providers require a variety of energy assets, such as batteries, generators, the grid, and renewable energy sources such as solar,” explained David LeClaire, Executive Vice President of North America at Galooli Ltd. “By monitoring and analyzing the metadata, Galooli can help service providers reduce energy costs, eliminate needless truck rolls, and gain a variety of real-time insight to reducing costs and document carbon footprint reductions. For any type of fixed service provider looking for Federal broadband assistance, Galooli can help ensure systems operate as energy efficiently as possible and provide the required documentation to verify compliance.”

For broadband providers of all types, the US Department of Commerce and the US Department of Agriculture are key to helping fund rural broadband deployments. The USDA’s ReConnect program provides loans and grants for the cost of construction, improvement, or acquisition of facilities, and equipment needed to provide broadband service in eligible rural areas. Recently, the USDA was allotted $1.9 billion for Round 4 of the ReConnect program in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). Likewise in May, the US Department of Commerce National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) launched the Broadband Equity Access and Deployment (BEAD) program. BEAD is the first step in making $42.5 billion in funding available to cover some of costs of bringing high-speed broadband to areas that currently do not have service available. Whether service providers are seeking funding for a new program funded through the IRA or an existing broadband funding program listed above, all submissions need to include energy efficiency and carbon footprint reduction plans and documentation.

Whether a fixed or wireless broadband service provider, resiliency is paramount to their service offerings. Virtually all systems, whether in remote huts, on rough tops, in central offices or on towers, utilize some sort of combination of backup batteries, generators, and solar power to ensure uninterrupted power. For areas where the grid is less reliable or nonexistent, all these assets may be required. Whatever the combination of energy assets, Galooli collects and analyzes all metadata and ensures they operate together, holistically and most efficiently enabling real-time monitoring to provide energy asset lifecycle management while eliminating unnecessary operations including truck roles. This can range from generators operating under load, batteries charging improperly, or even fuel theft. Often this energy insight will identify single sites that are causing massive drains on energy or identify which assets are performing efficiently or inefficiently.

Wireless 20|20’s WiROI™ db Geospatial SaaS Platform is a portfolio of software tools to help operators and their investors select the best places to deploy fiber and wireless broadband networks. The combination of their tools and consulting services helps service providers identify unserved areas, calculate the cost to deploy fiber and wireless broadband, and quickly perform ROI analyses on thousands of clusters and millions of locations using AI and big data analytics. This new partnership between Galooli and Wireless 20|20 will greatly simplify a service providers’ ability to meet the new energy efficiency and carbon footprint requirements to expand their broadband services.

Keep Your Remote Sites in Sync With FormsGate

Imagine needing to manually write down and add variables and IDs to each of your sensors and remote assets for your cell sites.

You might even have infrastructure in different areas, where technicians use different methods to document their work onsite. Collecting all of this information is daunting, and having to manually input the collected data into an online system is an even more time-consuming task.

Unfortunately, this is far from imagination and is a real problem for telecom operators and providers. The process of keeping your equipment information up to date and uniform is an arduous task that requires a great deal of manual adjustments and multiple processes.

Moreover, there can be many instances where information is simply uploaded and updated in the system, without any manager’s approval or perusal. This can lead to disruptions like maintenance issues that could have been caught if the date and last site visit details were readily available and updated.

This also makes it very difficult to determine which sites need a periodic assessment, and which are lower priority. All of this chaos and lack of automation makes the process of maintenance and logistical oversight extremely difficult.

No longer.

Close your information gaps with FormsGate

Galooli's Formsgate Interface with highlighted items overlayed

FormsGate is our new offering that provides a streamlined way to automate documenting site visits, supporting a wide array of variables and inputs from within our platform.  Users will also be able to change the settings of devices listed by our platform and ultimately digitize the site reporting process.

This will first and foremost help ensure all variables inputted by technicians line up with the information fields chosen for your remote equipment. FormsGate also significantly decreases the likelihood of data loss and eliminates the need for follow-up site visits to fix inaccuracies.

Lastly, there is a built-in approval process to ensure that only information checked and approved by a relevant manager can be uploaded into the system. As a bonus, instead of relying on third-party forms that will disappear after a certain period of time, the information is safely stored in perpetuity synced within our system. These forms can also be downloaded in PDF format if a client wants to save the information on their own servers.

What does this change?

First and foremost, as we mentioned before, the site audit process is automated on a number of levels relating to longer, more repetitive processes.

This in turn results in reduced follow-up visits which lowers travel costs, need for technicians onsite, and provides a built-in deterrent for fraudulent information.

FormsGate also makes the work done by technicians much more efficient, as the universal fields and built-in templates eliminate a great deal of potential for error or improper data input.

It’s time to get rid of data entry mistakes, streamline your site visit processes, and save on operational costs, so what are you waiting for? Contact us today and start ensuring your remote infrastructure is well-documented and maintained.

Pressing Refresh on Galooli’s Dashboards

Galooli's Dashboard Update Top Image
Galooli's Dashboard Update Top Image

Galooli has always endeavored to constantly look for ways to improve our solutions. Part of that is constantly looking for additions and feature improvements, but another critical aspect is feedback from our customers.

This is an aspect of our process that cannot be understated, and the improvements we have made would not have been possible without their participation in our pursuit of excellence.

With their insights into their use of our platform and modules, we were able to fine-tune our dashboards to provide even greater added value, clearer metrics, and more relevant performance breakdowns.

So let’s take a look at the changes we’ve made to the Galooli Platform’s Dashboards.

Though our current platform provides a comfortable, centralized location to remotely monitor and manage your assets, it still requires using a computer terminal of some sort to access. Fortunately, that is finally about to change.

Our clients will have visibility, monitoring and real-time alert capabilities in the palm of their hand.

Dashboards Breakdown

Our dashboards are divided into two distinct categories, each with its own purpose – Overview, and Performance.

Overview Dashboards are designed to provide an overview of remote sites’ performance on a periodic basis and track their improvements.

Performance Dashboards are focused on actively tracking asset performance, detecting problematic sites and alerting stakeholders to issues including asset health and inefficient use.

With that out of the way, lets dive into our new and improved dashboards.

Energy Management Overview

Managing KPIs has become much more streamlined, with tabs separating energy assets performance and overall KPIs according to the different categories. A graph displays the overall energy use of each asset per its relative energy use, instead of just over time. We can also isolate certain periods of time to identify issues, cleaned up the dashboard, and drag open performance reports for easy access.

Site Cost Overview

Users can now track how much a unit of energy costs per site, and their relative efficiency. Though large sites may have significant energy needs, they may be running relatively efficiently, while smaller sites perform poorly. Our algorithm takes this into account and can correctly identify the most costly sites worthwhile optimizing. This can be done on a per-site and per-network basis, and customers can add their own particular metrics that are relevant to their organization.

Grid Performance

We have a new dashboard that tracks grid usage! We track average availability per site and network-wide, along with time in use, outages, and worst offenders in terms of grid availability and usage. We also track instances when the grid was available, but a site didn’t utilize it, and when voltage goes over recommended levels.

LIB Performance

We also created a dashboard dedicated to Li-Ion battery performance on an in-depth level. Passive equipment can be some of the most expensive assets onsite, we provide a in-depth look at their performance. This includes State of Health and Charge, voltage, usage metrics, temperature trends, and overall battery status. We can also track how many sites are using Li-Ion batteries, how many are in use, the average number of batteries per site, and how many should be in use but aren’t.

Solar Performance

We took our renewable energy tracking a huge leap forward by creating a new separate dashboard for solar and other renewable energy performance. We track how much energy is gathered, what percent of the energy used came from renewables, cost savings from solar use, and what percent of your cost went to solar energy. We also provide a graph tracking the total kWh of use and the % of the energy provided, along with the best-performing sites in terms of their solar or renewable energy use.

Generator Performance

Our generator dashboard got a facelift and became much more focused and easy to navigate. We track fuel use, fuel drops, number of times refueled, relative generator efficiency, percent of generator reliance, effectiveness, and your fuel use per hour. We also track kVa, generator usage time, a pie graph visual of performance, and a breakdown of the availability and worst-performing generators.

Galooli’s primary objective!

Providing ICT organizations and facility managers globally a streamlined and comprehensive solution to their energy efficiency and sustainability challenges is Galooli’s primary objective. We want to be your partner as you push to reach annual ESG goals and create a more sustainable business operations model.

We will continue to work tirelessly to bring our clients the best we can offer in terms of innovative remote energy and site management, and stay tuned for new features and updates coming soon!

Introducing – The Galooli App. Our all-in-one mobile platform that offers a simple and easy-to-navigate overview of your remote assets from anywhere, any time. Instead of relying on multiple applications related to each asset or sector, our comprehensive mobile platform provides a centralized place to actively monitor all of your facilities and energy sources.

What did we change?

Our app provides a complete breakdown of your remote assets with easy to identify icons, alerts relating to their behavior and performance, and even their physical location using a map overlay. You can also search for specific sites or units, receive real-time alerts to any unexpected activity, and find navigation information to reach a specific asset.

The app supports 8 different languages and is as relevant to the manager in his office as it is to the technician on his way to check out a malfunction. Speaking of functionality, our application is fully supported on both Android and iPhone devices.

The mobile platform is designed in a storyboard format, to easily navigate between remote assets and keep performance data organized. Each storyboard carries its own detailed information on that particular asset depending on the KPIs being tracked. The assets are also categorized by their geographic location, so those that are the most relevant, or those closest in proximity, can be displayed first.

Reveal Your Carbon Footprint with Galooli’s Sustainability Module

Galooli is passionate about our aim to provide our customers and the planet with a greener, more sustainable future. From industrial facilities to data centers, telecom base stations and fleets, we help our customers maximize their energy efficiency, while minimizing energy waste and their carbon footprint. In 2021 alone, we were able to help them reduce their annual carbon emissions by over 10%!

By current figures, the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector could comprise up to 4% of the world’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. If you take into account the industrial and transportation fields, that number jumps to 71% of global emissionsWe are committed to providing our customers with solutions that offer in-depth, performance-based insights that can be implemented with immediate effect.

Industrial IoT under the microscope

Many large B2B organizations track some part their carbon footprint for regulatory and more recently, sustainability purposes. It’s no surprise that one of the largest overhead costs of running telecom sites is energy. Moreover, up to 70% of energy is wasted through various machinery and devices running unnecessarily while the site is idle.

The same is often true with data centers, with inefficient HVAC operations frequently causing wasted energy and rising operating costs. However, this is not the only consequence of inefficient operations. The wasted energy also produces additional GHG. These byproducts damage the surrounding environment and cause short- and long-term damage on a level we oftentimes can’t even see.

Organizations today have set energy and sustainability targets to ensure they maximize their efficiency and stop wasting OPEX on unnecessary energy use. This also translates to reduced carbon emissions and an improved overall footprint. This still leaves the question of how you can track and display your remote assets’ performance?

Animated visualization of Galooli's Sustainability Dashboard as it tracks your carbon KPIs

It’s time to reveal your carbon performance

Galooli has provided the answer with our new Sustainability Module. We have taken our carbon emissions tracking for remote sites and brought those capabilities several steps forward.

Now, companies can track their overall greenhouse gas emissions, and in the case of solar panel use, how much they saved each site on carbon emissions. Site emissions performance can be tracked over time, and sites can be compared, and problematic ones identified. We can also track the GHG emissions per unit of energy used, and breakdown those emission by Scope 1 and 2 by source.

Galooli also provides our customers with the visibility and control over their remote assets, and significantly reduce the need to be onsite to mitigate problems. This will eliminate the need to be onsite to diagnose and remedy several frequent issues and reduce emissions by removing the need for onsite technicians and travel.

Our solution improves asset durability and longevity, while minimizing our customers operational costs when it comes to maintenance and wasted energy. Our live alerts provide real-time updates to any errant activity like excessive emissions or energy use from a particular asset or site.

It is time to open full visibility over your GHG emissions for your remote infrastructure and start maximizing your GHG and operational costs savings with Galooli.
